For meteor showers, I like to go someplace flat and as dark as possible. So I do travel a long way to escape light pollution and get the flat horizons I like. So Azusa is too close to the San Gabriel Valley light pollution for me. Like you said, you didn't see much. I observed the Perseids from my Urban back yard in Monrovia, and only saw 15 (10 were Perseids) in 3 hours of looking. On a work night I can't drive 3 hours each way to Amboy Crater. Joshua Tree National Preserve is great - Cottonwood Road Campground, Jumbo Rocks, and Hidden Valley picnic area are all good. The city of Joshua Tree (not horrible, especially out of town) or Palmdale (light polluted) Have a look at this map and the black dots in SE Cal are where I go http://cleardarksky.com/csk/prov/California_map.html?Mn=equatorial%20mount Amboy Crater, Hole in the Wall Campground in Mojave National Preserve.
Hi Jane,

I went up into the Azusa canyon this year to view the meteor showers and didn't see much. Some of the places you recommend Amboy creator, seem really far away, as you stated. What do you think of Joshua tree or Palmdale or driving further into the local mountains ?
